Production cycle – Saddlery
Each and every Maserati is unique; a distinctiveness that is also reflected in the choice of finish as Maserati enrobes its interiors in Poltrona Frau® leather.
The Poltrona Frau® marque is renowned for its quality, elegance, suppleness, usability and for its hardwearing qualities. These enviable characteristics have been achieved thanks to a leather treatment process that combines craftsmanship with state-of-the-art technology.
Poltrona Frau® boasts a fully equipped laboratory that specialises in the analysis of materials. One special area of interest is upholstery for vehicle interiors; through usage simulations, Poltrona Frau® can tell if a particular material meets its exacting standards.
Pelle Frau® is the secret of the company’s success. The close relationship between Poltrona Frau® and the best tanning centres in and around Vicenza results in a unique and top of the range product.
There are 20 stages to the tanning process before the leather is ready to use. Pelle Frau® is made up of purely natural embossed leather, that layer does not undergo any mechanical treatment. This is separated from the inferior grade, the crust, through a procedure known as splitting.
The tanning agents convert the leather fibres into a hardwearing product, improving suppleness, its resistance to abrasion and to heat. The leather is then passed through a roller that removes any excess liquid. Once selected, it is cut to size and sliced to make it a uniform thickness.
The leather is then retanned and undergoes chrome tanning to ensure uniform colour reception. The final ‘liquid’ stage is its soaking in grease, a stage that ensures permanent elasticity and suppleness. After tanning comes the drying and the pressing stages, a procedure that opens up the leather and makes it even more flexible. To round things off is the finishing stage, this is where the product gets its touch of originality, to unlock its natural beauty.
Before going into production, each Poltrona Frau® leather sample has to pass strict tests. These range from the organoleptic check to the acceptance of the leather at the factory and technical tests to judge the resistance of the colour under wear, light and changes in temperature, its suppleness and the way it fits to the cars’ interior. All the tests are carried out in the Poltrona Frau® laboratory, established in 1970.
