In the Sport category at the wheel of a Maserati 300S, Scarlatti came first in the Mille Miglia in 1956 and 1957. He won the Targa Florio aboard a 200S and brought the A6GCS home to glory at Pontedecimo/Giovi in 1956. In 1957 he triumphed again, this time in the 200SI.
Scarlatti's first outing in the top formula series came at the Monte Carlo Grand Prix in 1956 at the wheel of a Ferrari 500. The Roman, however, failed to qualify and had to put back his debut to Nürburgring, where he had to retire from the race.
The following year, 1957, Scarlatti became an official Maserati driver. The car he drove was the 250F in which he qualified in 14th place, only to retire from the race. His best result that year was the 5th spot earned at Monza.
In 1958 he raced as a privateer in the 250F but pulled out at Monaco and again in Holland. Over the next few years, Scarlatti raced for both Cooper and De Domaso before calling time on his competitive career in 1961. He passed away in 1992 after suffering a stroke.
