Safety is one of the fundamental principles on which any Maserati project is based. Every Maserati is equipped with sophisticated active safety technology and fitted with advanced passive safety features.

Maserati designs chassis that are rigid, providing both a solid base for confidence-inspiring handling as well as energy-absorbing crumple zones.  The exceptional balance and weight distribution of the chassis not only improves performance but also adds an increased measure of safety by reducing stopping distances and potentially giving the driver the ability to maneuver around an accident rather than into one.

All Maseratis have a number of safety features as standard, including a collapsible steering column, front and rear seat belts equipped with pre-tensioners and load limiters, two front airbags, two side curtain airbags and two airbags in the front doors to help provide protection from side impacts.

Maserati also integrates advanced electronic systems to help provide a safety net for the driver with the integration of ABS, EBD and MSP.  ABS stands for anti-lock braking system, technology which helps the driver to achieve maximum available braking force by preventing wheel lock-up.  Rolling wheels have more grip than a locked, skidding wheel, and rolling wheels also respond to steering inputs, potentially allowing the driver to steer around an obstacle in a panic braking situation.  The ABS acts on a braking system designed for Maserati by Brembo, a premier manufacturer of racing brake technology.  EBD is electronic brake force distribution, a system which is designed to electronically proportion brake force front to rear, to the end of the car with the most grip.  Because of the rearward weight bias of the Maserati chassis more brake force can be applied to the rear than in most other cars, allowing the rear to accept more brake force, thereby shortening stopping distances. MSP is the Maserati Stability Program, an integration of traction and stability control.  Traction control is designed to reduce wheelspin, and stability control is designed to limit over and understeer – also known as fishtailing or plowing, respectively.  In a Maserati all of these systems are integrated and communicate over a CAN, or controlled area network, and work together to help keep the driver in control and on the road.

The safety features offered by Maserati also include xenon headlights, which help visibility at night, and a tire pressure monitoring system that alerts the driver to low tire pressure situations – low tire pressure not only reduces grip and handling performance, but it also reduces gas mileage as well. 

It is no coincidence that the performance elements that Maserati designs into our cars, from the balance and handling of the chassis to the exceptional braking system, also help improve the safety of the cars.  Decades of racing wins have taught us that performance and safety go hand in hand.
